AK Blogs: The Heroine Series #1: Mum Carol - Soweto, South Africa

For Womens month, I’d like to talk about a couple of different tremendous women who make a difference everyday. They may not be on the news and they may not be famous, but they are the heroes in our world that make it turn. The first I’d like to introduce to you is….



Mum Carol: An Extraordinary Woman

A long crested eagle flies high above a Soweto Township, appearing with the dawn as it views the blend of earth and sky. Perhaps it knows instinctively that the search for basics in this sprawling arena of poverty, closely relates to the methods of survival it uses and its will to survive amidst tremendous odds.



In spite of the hardships and challenges of daily life, hundreds of orphaned children, will open their eyes and once again awaken their sleeping spirits. For many of them, it is because of the presence of a woman in their lives, named Mum Carol, that they know, even without a mother or father and with the responsibility of raising younger brothers or sisters, that they still have a chance. Mum Carol is their constant—a vigilant mother warrior who protects, nurtures, teaches and most importantly gives them love in a world where most of these precious human assets have been taken away from them all too soon.

Carol Dyantyi was born and raised in the heart of the Soweto township. She began her work at 15 as a voice speaking out against the implementation of Afrikaans being taught as South Africa's official language during apartheid. This was a part of the very famous children’s uprising—the Soweto Uprising on June 16, 1976—where Carol risked her life for the things she knew was wrong.
Mum Carol later said"We believed it would be a peaceful demonstration to aid our grievances, little did we know what we would face. We certainly didn't expect that some of us would die. But we also never expected that our actions would help lead to freedom."



The freedom she is speaking about is the end to apartheid, which possibly wouldn't have happened if Mum Carol and her peers hadn't taken to the streets.



Incredible!



Later she worked in the hotel industry then went on to study nursing before becoming the mother to more than 1,500 children and beginning Ikageng ministries, the safe haven that she started completely on her own once she noticed that her very own neighborhood was becoming filled with children who had lost their parents from AIDS and had no one to help or guide them.
She has always been someone to speak out against the world’s wrong doings and care deeply for others. She knows the result of pain and fear all too well, and in so many ways. She intimately knows the MANY challenges these children must face to overcome the tragedy of losing one or both of their parents to the blight of AIDS.



At the beginning of each day, Mum Carol reaches for the staff of responsibility, firmly gripping it in her able hands as she guides thousands of orphaned children through her“Ikageng Itireleng AIDS Ministry” -which means ‘help them help themselves’ in Sotho, help them navigate the maze of a hybrid adulthood thrust upon them without the experience or wisdom from the adults who gave them life.



It is within this setting that Mum Carol has committed herself to helping her children achieve the victories of their dreams and give a breath of hope you can actually see on their faces.



Perhaps you do not believe in Saints or Guardian Angels, and find that life is somehow a series of random acts that are beyond our control. However, after spending time with and getting to know Mum Carol, it is quite simple to understand that her strength of faith and her boundless love is more than random acts of kindness, but rather the power that lies in each of us that is not always visible or predictable but lies somewhere in the realm of our spiritual existence.



This is a place where Mum Carol, it seems, has always lived.



She is a heroine! She is an everyday woman of spectacular caliber, just like you and I, who decided to take fate in her hands, and change the world. One child at a time. Let's celebrate her!

AK Blogs: Let us revel in the glory

Today is the 100th anniversary of Women's International Day! Loving this! Although to me, EVERYDAY is Women's Day! So let’s celebrate how incredible we are!



International Women's Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday. I'm actually surprised, and disappointed, it's not a national holiday in the U.S. since it was initially founded in our country. However, in the United States, March is considered"Women's History Month."



I like the reminders of these special moments in history and the dates created to celebrate them, but I'm never comfortable that they are boxed into one day or one month, after the years and years of struggle for progress.



So what happened to bring us to this day? Women's inequality and oppression was spurring women to campaign for change. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. In 1909, the first National Women's Day was observed but it changed to a more international day a few years later. In1910, a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) brought up the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year, in every country, there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. In 1911, the first International Women's Day was born.



I love learning things like this. It fires me up and reminds me of all the ways that we can appreciate how far we've come and continue to push forward to–greater heights.



I'd like to continue to press for the image of women, so that we’re seen more than just an object of possession or for our sexuality. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the amount of images that are thrown at us to make us feel like our beauty or our body- just as we are- is - inadequate. I love the strength and intelligence of a woman's mind and I am constantlyinspired by the endless ways we contribute to the world. Today and every day I am celebrating our brilliance!

Lately I can't help but think of the most powerful force in the world... women.



What an incredible mystery we are: So strong and capable, yet gentle and vulnerable. Extremely complex, with bodies made as God's masterpiece.



Now that I'm a mother, I think of my mother often. I look at her through different eyes. I think of all she did for me, gave to me, gave up FOR me. I think of how much she loves me. I think of a mother's love......



Everywhere I look, I can see the expression of a mother's love: In the massive buildings on Broadway, in the classes of a school, in the growing of trees and flowers, in the stars in the sky; none would be possible without it.



Lately, I've been meeting powerhouse executive moms. I think of how much there is to juggle, to be, to do. I had a lot of interesting meetings this week where I met with all kinds of interesting people, but I found myself ZOOMING IN on the mothers in the room. I couldn't help it, but I want to know their tricks. When did they start their children on sleep schedules? How do they balance the demands of work and motherhood? How about time for yourself? Is it true you have to leave your child in their crib and refrain from picking them up to REALLY get them to sleep through the night? ( I'm obviously thinking about getting Egypt to sleep, huh? LOL)



The more I learn about the lives of different women, be it the professional woman, the stay-at-home woman, the single parent woman, the executive woman, the philanthropic woman - the list goes on and on - I become filled with pride. As women, we may not have it all, but we do it all. Call us friends, wives, mommies, wonder women, super women— we seriously kick ass.



The thing I have found we have in common is that we're all just trying to do our best. We're figuring it out, we're all growing and learning everyday. Because without the wonders of a woman, nothing would grow as tall, nothing would be built as big, nothing would be so fragrant, or shine as bright. So the more I think about it, the more I'm certain that a woman's love is the most powerful force in the world.

Alicia's Latest Blog: Word Power

I was watching this amazing show on Oprah's OWN network called"Master Class"with one of my all time favorite women in the world, Maya Angelou. (Wow! This show is good!)

First, I was thinking about what a GIFT a moment like that is, where you actually get to spend time with and hear the knowledge of someone as special and genius as Dr. Angelou... but I digress.

Then she started talking about words and their power. How words can get into your clothes, into your hair, creep inside the walls, until they start to be all over you and make you who you are. And that is why, she said, we must watch the words we speak and watch the words we allow to be spoken around us.

This struck me SO deeply because I am SUCH a believer in Word Power: the power that words have, both negatively and positively.

Because of this power, I always try to choose mine carefully. I think about how often people gossip about other people, and how everyone feeds on it like carnivores and then walk away, still feeling negative. Some people might rationalize that if they weren't the ones originating the gossip, than they had nothing to do with it. But what does it do to you, listening for a hour to a really nasty and judgmental conversation about someone, who’s just another human being, struggling in their lives like everyone else? Have you ever thought about that? Thought about the residue it leaves on you?

My friend, author and adviser, Linda Brierty, often speaks to this and I really feel and appreciate her thoughts. She always says,"Compassion is the key."

When you choose compassion, it washes away all the dark and dirty things that get stuck in our clothes, in our hair and inside our walls, negative things that make us less than the special, light-giving people we can be.

So, turn away from the dark and turn on your light, and just watch how many people you can affect - in a positive way. And if you think about it, that's a simple way to change the world. Or at the very least, YOUR world!

It's amazing the power we have within. So simple, yet so strong!

Alicia Keysha recentemente pubblicato un post scritto da lei in cui parla della situazione egiziana.

"Quando le persone si trovano coinvolte in situazioni in cui i loro sogni, le speranze e le idee non vengono ascoltate,è normale che accada qualcosa. Qualcosa che è così naturale e potente, come l'acqua che cerchiamo quando abbiamo sete o il cibo che cerchiamo quando abbiamo fame. Questa voglia di cambiare, di muoversi in una direzione diversa dalla solita produce una voce forte abbastanza da vibrare e abbattereil muro eretto da coloro che tentano di opprimere la volontà delle masse e ostacolano la lotta per un futuro migliore. Quella prima voce di piccole dimensioni che ha osato parlare, che ha resistito e protestato è diventata ora la voce di milioni di persone e non può e non sarà messa a tacere.

Ho visitato l'Egitto e ho viaggiato per le strade del Cairo, di Alessandria e ho visitato villaggi stanziati lungo il Nilo; quella piccola voce di protesta stava nascendo ed ora finalmenteè riconosciuta e rispettata in tutto l'Egitto.

Ora, come la luce del sole e il vento che soffia senza permesso nel Sahara coprendo le piramidi di sabbia, dobbiamo solo ricordarci che questa voglia di parlare e di gridare la propria libertà, non dovrebbe mai essere negata ne ignorata.

Quando guardo mio figlio, mi rendo conto più che mai che il suo nome rappresenta la volontà di essere liberi, di poter cambiare e avere il coraggio per gridare!

Noi siamo in grado di sentire quella voce...

FREEDOM…Can you hear it?

When people find themselves caught in a place where their dreams, hopes and ideas have nowhere to breathe or fly, something happens. Something that is so natural and powerful, like the water we seek when thirsty, or the food we need when hunger takes over. This energy to change, to move in a different direction produces a voice—a voice loud and strong enough to vibrate and shake the wall that attempts to oppress the will of the masses and the fight for the future. From that first small voice that dared to speak, to resist, to protest - a small, but important insult has now grown into a voice of millions that cannot andwill not be silenced.

I have visited Egypt and as I traveled through along the streets of Cairo, the back streets of Alexandria and the villages along the Nile, it was easy to see that a small, quiet vibration was growing, building, reaching to a pitch that is now heard by the ears of the world. There have been many who have attempted to deny the force of change as if trying to prevent a flower from its blossom or a mother from giving birth. In every case this deeply rooted will to express what cannot be denied, rises up and forces all of us to recognize and respect this voice that produced the sound of freedom playing long and strong throughout Egypt.

Now as the light of the sun and the sand gust winds from the Sahara blow without permission and cover the streets and pyramids, let’s remember that this undeniable spirit to speak—even to shout from the heart, should never be denied and never, ever be ignored.

Now when I look at my son, I realize more than ever that his name represents more than the will to be free—it stands for the fight for change, and the courage to shout!

We can hear the voice… and it is ours.

Little Drummer Girl (Engelska)

This was the absolute FIRST song I ever recorded that was going to be released in some way.

I can't even remember exactly when it was? Maybe 1996?

If u can imagine young AK in Tims and jeans walking down those mean and dirty New York streets diddy-boppin to the Reasonable Doubt album or maybe Ray's Purple Tape. I was so excited about picking a Christmas song to record for an album called"The 12 Soulful Nights of Christmas"that JD and my then label, Columbia Records were putting together.

I remember sitting at my piano, vibing on the freshest way I could play one of my favorite songs"Little Drummer Boy"which of course had to be renamed"The Little Drummer Girl";-)

I was in my one bedroom apartment at the piano in the corner of the living room, just steps away from my"bedroom"and I played these jazzy style chords since I was starting to really get into jazz structures.

Anyway I stayed up late into the night to come up with the ultimate"Flip."

Then I went into the Studio with Rodney Jerkins and we produced the record together. I knew I wanted those Al Green style drums bangin behind it. In fact, I knew exactly what I wanted, and that was the beginning of me learning to become a producer.

I have the best memory of this song.

It was one of my"firsts"and now as I approach another First - experiencing the first Christmas with our Son. I feel like it's only right to share this song with you.

The Power of the New

Whenever I discover something that has existed for hundreds perhaps thousandsof years and witness or experience it for the first time, I categorize that momentas“new.” New in the sense that it becomes part of me finding its place in mymemory that was not there before. The idea that comes to me while sitting quietlyin a room or as I walk along the street perhaps has always existed inside my headbut at that moment of realization, the newness of that idea brings with it a sortof power. A power that I can use to change or make a correction for the good ofmyself, even others.

With the arrival of new life into our family this year, the meaning of theword“new” and the power of that newness has taken on a completely differentmeaning. It’s probably true that all of the motherly instincts have existed insideme for a long time, but to actually realize the existence of another life that isso incredible and miraculously connected to my own, produces another kindof “newness.” That first sound a child makes, heard by mothers and fathers since thebeginning of time, is a unique, tonal quality all its own that I know I will recognizefor a lifetime. Then when it becomes the tone of that first, new cry that seems almostmelodic, I attempt to use the power of understanding to figure out what it is thatthis precious new life is attempting to tell me.

There’s an old saying amongst some elder musicians, that there is nothing new tothe music, just variations of what has always been. It’s true that the sound of middleC with an augmented fifth is a musical chord that has always existed, but until thatmoment when it was first created, its mystery was only solved by the power tocreate a new and unique sound. A vision of a woman’s face sitting quietly, lookinginto the distance lives only inside the mind of the painter until the power to createwhat we will see on the canvas as something new, pushes the strokes of the brush.

So now, whenever I wish someone a Happy New Year, there is a power that I hopewill translate with that wish, to not only enjoy the newness of the seasons, the peopleand places they may discover, but also to find the newness of life and all it has tooffer us. To use the power of their newness to lift and carry others to a place whereevery moment has the wonder and magic of becoming something new.

A Gift for Cranberry Street Pt.2 (engelska)

Before long, another Villager walked by and noticed Leenah and Jamal standing watching over the gift.“What are you doing?” asked the Villager. “The Mailman has left a gift and we don’t know what to do,” replied Leenah. The Villager approached the two children and leaned in toward the gift for a closer look. “There’s no name and no address,” the Villager stated. “How do you know the gift even belongs here?” That's the mystery,” Jamal answered. “We’re not even sure if the mailman knew where to leave it,” added Leenah. “Well, it was left here for a reason,” said the Villager.

Just then, another Villager happened to pass by with her two children.“Look Mother,” cried the first child. “Do you see that beautiful gift by the door?” she asked. “What do you think it could be?” asked the second child. As the mother and her two children walked up the path toward the gift to get a closer look, the first Villager placed his body in frontof the gift trying to hide it from view of the approaching mother and her two children. “What are you doing?” Leenah asked. “You can’t let other people come too close to the gift,” the first Villager ordered. “They might think that the gift is for them and try to keep it for themselves,” he added. But the first Villager could not totally block the view of the gift from the two children as they ran around him circling the gift. “What do you think is in it?” asked the first child. “Maybe it’s a special toy,” replied the second child. “Since it was left here at Mother Goodtree’s, perhaps it might be from someone she knew,” the mother stated. “But there’s no name and no address,” the first Villager reminded her. “Even the mailman can’t just guess where a gift should go with no address and no name,” he added.

Pretty soon, a crowd of Villagers had gathered in front of the old Goodtree house all asking the same question. As everyone began to talk at the same time attempting to ask and answer, the youngest child of the Village pulled on one of the ribbons tied to the lovely box. As if by some mysterious power with a pair of hands that no one could see, the ribbon began to unwrap.“Look,” someone shouted. “The box is opening,” shouted another. The Villagers slowly stepped back as the youngest child sat in amazement watching as the top of the box slide to the side. The young child reached inside and took the Welcome Star from the box revealing it to the crowd in all its shining glory.

Some shouted cheers of happiness and jubilation as they jumped and danced around while others fell to their knees weeping as they gave praise and thanks for the return of the special star.“This is a sign,” shouted one of the Villagers. “Perhaps it is time to bring back the Holiday Festival to Cranberry Street,” announced another Villager. Soon all along Cranberry street, the people were placing their hand-made ornaments and decorations in the trees, along the fences and on top of the hedges as they awakened the sleeping spirit of Golden Grapes.

On the first night of the holiday festival, Jamal and Leenah were chosen to hand the Welcome Star at the entrance to Cranberry Street. Perhaps it was the added light of the clear night sky and the winter moon with it’s reflection from the snow that gave the light from the Welcome Star an even brighter glow. This new and luminescent light became the beacon, lightin the way for travelers even further away than before.

As the first night of the festival came to a close, the faint sound of bells that sounded like musical voices could be heard in the distance by a few of the Villagers.“Can you hear that?” asked one of the Villager’s. “It’s coming from somewhere down the road,” another Villager answered. As they gathered under the Welcome Star to listen and watch as the mystical sound became clearer, someone standing high up on a ladder shouted, “Look, someone’s coming.” The Villager’s stood silent and still as the figure of an old but sturdy woman slowly approached. “It’s Mother Goodtree,” another shouted. The Villager’s raced toward Mother Goodtree surrounding and embracing her with warmth and love.

As they all slowly walked down Cranberry Street one of the Villager’s asked, “Where have you been Mother Goodtree?” I have been searching for a very long time for the Welcome Star,” Mother Goodtree answered. “One day I met a man who could not see. He told me of a another man who offered to sell him a special gift that he could not keep,” she explained.“The Blind Man asked the old traveler to describe the special gift and how he came to have it. From the sound of the old traveler’s voice, the Blind Man knew he was buying something that had been taken without permission,” Mother Goodtree added. “When I asked the Blind Man where the gift was, he explained that the gift had been returned to the place where it belonged, “The shining light and the memories brought me back to my home,"said Mother Goodtree, smiling.

Then one of the Villagers told how the beautiful box had been opened breaking her rule.“The child broke no rule of mine,” stated Mother Goodtree. “The willingness to discover and explore a thing of beauty is ruled only by a strength of heart. It is the thing I discovered on my journey in search of the Welcome Star,” she added.

With Mother Goodtree’s return, the village soon returned to it’s charm and beauty with a renewed spirit to keep Cranberry Street a place of welcome with a star whose light will shine in the hearts of us all.

The Power of the New -

Whenever I discover something that has existed for hundreds perhaps thousands
of years and witness or experience it for the first time, I categorize that moment
as“new.” New in the sense that it becomes part of me finding its place in my
memory that was not there before. The idea that comes to me while sitting quietly
in a room or as I walk along the street perhaps has always existed inside my head
but at that moment of realization, the newness of that idea brings with it a sort
of power. A power that I can use to change or make a correction for the good of
myself, even others.

With the arrival of new life into our family this year, the meaning of the
word“new” and the power of that newness has taken on a completely different
meaning. It’s probably true that all of the motherly instincts have existed inside
me for a long time, but to actually realize the existence of another life that is
so incredible and miraculously connected to my own, produces another kind
of“newness.” That first sound a child makes, heard by mothers and fathers since the
beginning of time, is a unique, tonal quality all its own that I know I will recognize
for a lifetime. Then when it becomes the tone of that first, new cry that seems almost
melodic, I attempt to use the power of understanding to figure out what it is that
this precious new life is attempting to tell me.

There’s an old saying amongst some elder musicians, that there is nothing new to
the music, just variations of what has always been. It’s true that the sound of middle
C with an augmented fifth is a musical chord that has always existed, but until that
moment when it was first created, its mystery was only solved by the power to
create a new and unique sound. A vision of a woman’s face sitting quietly, looking
into the distance lives only inside the mind of the painter until the power to create
what we will see on the canvas as something new, pushes the strokes of the brush.

So now, whenever I wish someone a Happy New Year, there is a power that I hope
will translate with that wish, to not only enjoy the newness of the seasons, the people
and places they may discover, but also to find the newness of life and all it has to
offer us. To use the power of their newness to lift and carry others to a place where
every moment has the wonder and magic of becoming something new.

A Gift for Cranberry Street Pt.2

Before long, another Villager walked by and noticed Leenah and Jamal standing watching over the gift.“What are you doing?” asked the Villager. “The Mailman has left a gift and we don’t know what to do,” replied Leenah. The Villager approached the two children and leaned in toward the gift for a closer look. “There’s no name and no address,” the Villager stated. “How do you know the gift even belongs here?” That's the mystery,” Jamal answered. “We’re not even sure if the mailman knew where to leave it,” added Leenah. “Well, it was left here for a reason,” said the Villager.

Just then, another Villager happened to pass by with her two children.“Look Mother,” cried the first child. “Do you see that beautiful gift by the door?” she asked. “What do you think it could be?” asked the second child. As the mother and her two children walked up the path toward the gift to get a closer look, the first Villager placed his body in frontof the gift trying to hide it from view of the approaching mother and her two children. “What are you doing?” Leenah asked. “You can’t let other people come too close to the gift,” the first Villager ordered. “They might think that the gift is for them and try to keep it for themselves,” he added. But the first Villager could not totally block the view of the gift from the two children as they ran around him circling the gift. “What do you think is in it?” asked the first child. “Maybe it’s a special toy,” replied the second child. “Since it was left here at Mother Goodtree’s, perhaps it might be from someone she knew,” the mother stated. “But there’s no name and no address,” the first Villager reminded her. “Even the mailman can’t just guess where a gift should go with no address and no name,” he added.

Pretty soon, a crowd of Villagers had gathered in front of the old Goodtree house all asking the same question. As everyone began to talk at the same time attempting to ask and answer, the youngest child of the Village pulled on one of the ribbons tied to the lovely box. As if by some mysterious power with a pair of hands that no one could see, the ribbon began to unwrap.“Look,” someone shouted. “The box is opening,” shouted another. The Villagers slowly stepped back as the youngest child sat in amazement watching as the top of the box slide to the side. The young child reached inside and took the Welcome Star from the box revealing it to the crowd in all its shining glory.

Some shouted cheers of happiness and jubilation as they jumped and danced around while others fell to their knees weeping as they gave praise and thanks for the return of the special star.“This is a sign,” shouted one of the Villagers. “Perhaps it is time to bring back the Holiday Festival to Cranberry Street,” announced another Villager. Soon all along Cranberry street, the people were placing their hand-made ornaments and decorations in the trees, along the fences and on top of the hedges as they awakened the sleeping spirit of Golden Grapes.

On the first night of the holiday festival, Jamal and Leenah were chosen to hand the Welcome Star at the entrance to Cranberry Street. Perhaps it was the added light of the clear night sky and the winter moon with it’s reflection from the snow that gave the light from the Welcome Star an even brighter glow. This new and luminescent light became the beacon, lightin the way for travelers even further away than before.

As the first night of the festival came to a close, the faint sound of bells that sounded like musical voices could be heard in the distance by a few of the Villagers.“Can you hear that?” asked one of the Villager’s. “It’s coming from somewhere down the road,” another Villager answered. As they gathered under the Welcome Star to listen and watch as the mystical sound became clearer, someone standing high up on a ladder shouted, “Look, someone’s coming.” The Villager’s stood silent and still as the figure of an old but sturdy woman slowly approached. “It’s Mother Goodtree,” another shouted. The Villager’s raced toward Mother Goodtree surrounding and embracing her with warmth and love.

As they all slowly walked down Cranberry Street one of the Villager’s asked, “Where have you been Mother Goodtree?” I have been searching for a very long time for the Welcome Star,” Mother Goodtree answered. “One day I met a man who could not see. He told me of a another man who offered to sell him a special gift that he could not keep,” she explained.“The Blind Man asked the old traveler to describe the special gift and how he came to have it. From the sound of the old traveler’s voice, the Blind Man knew he was buying something that had been taken without permission,” Mother Goodtree added. “When I asked the Blind Man where the gift was, he explained that the gift had been returned to the place where it belonged, “The shining light and the memories brought me back to my home,"said Mother Goodtree, smiling.

Then one of the Villagers told how the beautiful box had been opened breaking her rule.“The child broke no rule of mine,” stated Mother Goodtree. “The willingness to discover and explore a thing of beauty is ruled only by a strength of heart. It is the thing I discovered on my journey in search of the Welcome Star,” she added.

With Mother Goodtree’s return, the village soon returned to it’s charm and beauty with a renewed spirit to keep Cranberry Street a place of welcome with a star whose light will shine in the hearts of us all.
